created using MaStory on the N900
You might want to use a more effective means of obscuring personal information from Conversations; your blurring leaves the numbers quite readable, and the addresses mostly so.
You can read that? hmm, I will be sure to turn up Gaussian blur next time. 🙂 Since names are not involved, I’ll leave the above as is. Thanks.
I recommend using a really strong horizontal component in the blur. I find that a horizontal radius of 20px with a vertical of 5px works really well, and it still makes the UI look like it’s supposed to.
Also, you should use PNG images rather than JPG, it’s much better suited for screenshots and you won’t get image artifacts.
Don’t use a Gaussian blur; instead use pixelization.
For example, if you’re using The Gimp, open the image file and select Filters->Blur->Pixelize . I find that the default settings work very well.
Looking great, cannot express how awesome it is that the community makes all these things possible. Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling 😉
Omg, this looks awesome, it’s all I’ve ever wanted from my N900. Thank you for your hard work!
Thx nice pics.
Actually I’ve been using CSSU for three weeks with no problems. Have to say good work all.
Excellent Work!!! Amazing!! Keep it please!!
Greetings from Portugal, Humberto Patricio
Great work guys, I remember Nokia promised “pervasive” portrait support in 2009. What they couldn’t do in 18 months, you guys have achieved in under 2 months…Kudos.
I forgot to mention, we really do need to start supporting our community devs financially. I had seen some proposal on our community wiki if Nokia pulled the financial plug, but regardless, we should be contributing something to recognise the hard work.
guys seriously, i have had this phone for 9 months now,
i have never seen such great work done before from a community towards a phone!
this phone has amazing potential, and nokia really screwed us up by not continuing to maemo 6 and further upgrades after pr 1.3
i cant thank you guys enough for all the community updates !
the phone is getting better and better by the day , all the new functions are very smooth , i have been using them ever since it was out.
if there’s anyway to help u guys if nokia pull the plug on financial aid to the project, i will be more than glad to help out, and i am sure a lot of other people who are making use of these updates will be mroe than happy to help u guys out
again, i cant thank u guys enough !
Portrait Keyboard would an awesome feature in conversations and web browsing.
Some apps with default mode is portrail is automatic rotate. It’s not good 😦
@Travla, “I remember Nokia promised “pervasive” portrait support in 2009.”
No, they didn’t. They promised that the browser would get portrait support and it did.
@midflow, “Some apps with default mode is portrail is automatic rotate. It’s not good :(”
See this: http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU/Features/Portrait_mode – and specifically the bit about “*not* enabling system-wide portrait mode”
Is the mode rotation controlled by application or forced by the Maemo?
Nice article, will begin the Twitter spam to get people interested and increase the knowledge.
Kudos to all of you who worked and keeping working hard on this. This is a fine example of what can be done by the community, keep up the good work. Thinking of the next device is this sort of protocol in the works or is this exclusive to Maemo 5 viva Fremantle.
The portrait implementation is a good step forward. I have a question can the same be done to improve some are apps, I’m aware they may be closed source to Nokia. What I mean is for example the clock application it could do with a refresh to make it easier to set alarms. I always find it rather tedious to set a short alarm for the next ten minutes, say when I’m cooking (just like on Symbian phones). It’s great to see these things happen in Maemo 5 maybe Nokia could give Maemo 6 to the community to develop.
My thanks also to this wonderful community. I am also willing to contribute to a development fund.
Oh Yes!!! I really want to see portrait keyboard, handwriting, more audio and video plugins (codec),portrait mode for music player, more camera options.
If it is possible – hildon desktop portrait mode.
Oh yes… almost forgot – unlock screen portrait mode (that would be sooooo awesome).
What else…
Oh yes – Any chance getting Flash Player 10.1 or even 10.2 for N900 ???
And how about front camera and NORMAL radio app with RDS (if possible)?
And the last thing – could someone make a widget like HTC flipclock and weather widget???
By the way greetings from LATVIA 🙂
good ideas! For the system enhancements, adding a feature-request on bugs.maemo.org would be a great first step.
Flash is probably a dead-end without Nokia/Adobe support.
I believe there is a Radio app in Extras that supports RDS.
Thanks for the comment!
There are also desktop clocks and creating a flip-clock may not be too challenging. Try suggesting in the forums.
I don’t know about HTC’s weather widget, but OMweather does the job for me.
Would be nice they could also add the REBOOT button aswell in the status menu applet, since its anyway an easy hack.
Thank you very much to everyone who is contributing to Maemo, I love the changes and options that are being added, and look forward to future updates. ❤
WOW! Thats.. wow! Amazing work!
I really hope you get a Flattr account and a button here, so that I can give you my support in other than these supporting/encouraging sentences. Thank you for your hard work and this blog!
Facebrick doesn’t work anymore…so Would love to see a Facebook application…
A Facebook application is not relevant to the SSU. But you’re right, we don’t have a nice facebook community (extras) app yet. Kasvopus has been creating a stir. check it out!
WOW…. Amazing work!…. all the apps working fine no issue so far..many apps are not fully supported in portrait mode (like calender) but I believe our Heroes working working on these and will consider all issues and required enhancement… salute to all guys working on this…
Absolutely superb work, I reckon this is just unprecedented in the mobile phone world. I would be happy to donate money to the clever folk who are doing this for us N900 users. What a phone! What a community! Thanks guys 🙂
I love what the maemo.org community has done for the N900. I never would have imagine the support by developer and members of the forum. Before I bought my N900, I was skeptical about support by nokia, but the community and supporters made it all possible for us to have such a great experience with the N900. Thank you guys for the everything you have done. The maemo community is making nokia look like tools for not supporting such a great and powerful device. Great job! and once again thank you!
Words cant express how much of great job the dev have done. I have always been diffrent from everyone on the technology i pick. I cant find anything out there that can match the relationship i have with my n900. And the new dev have filled any many many holes the n900 had. Much thnx. These guys should create a donations pot on paypal of some sort. Peace and Love
There has been discussion in the past about donations. Look here. Let’s hope the new Maemo Council gets this moving forward.
Unfortunately, I can’t install it. When it comes to the last step, HAM asks me to make a backup and update the phone through Nokia PC Suite. Also, while using HAM, no catalogs (or repositories) are available, despite the fact that /etc/apt/sources.list is listing them, apt-get update updates them and Fast Application Manager manages them alright.
plezz put java in n900 so we can insttil java apps pleezzzzzzzzzz
Hi smeagol,
There is such kind of application, pls check http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/icedtea6/
thx 4 maemo for this update x)
This is an amazing update! My phone is faster now too!
Landscape mode is now locked. Though I wish I could lock Portrait mode too and Manually switch between Landscape Mode and Portrait Mode ie) by opening/closing the slider keyboard.
I have installed CSSU updates, everything is perfect except the settings menu and conversations. Under settings menu I couldnot see CSSU transitions tuner. Why is that…..
CSSU Transistions Tuner is not a part of CSSU. It is a separate package that is available in extras-devel. It should show up in Extras soon. There is another package called CSSU Features Configuration that is currently in extras-testing. Check it out.
how to change the size of the shortcut?
how to change the shortcut size after the update? theme customizer doesn’t seem to work~
Is there any chance things Maemo, Meego, Or FreMantle will ever run on Android phones? Specifically the Motorola Droid 2. And I mean completely. With every ounce of Android removed and running Maemo / Meego / Fremantle natively. I’ve seen people run Ubuntu and others using emulation. But I don’t want that. I want to have this Installed completely on the hardware.
If the BIOS would need to be flashed that would be ok as long as there would be instructions on how to do so.
Android may have wide adoption and lots of nice apps. But its not TRULY open source since its developed behind closed doors. And can’t be taken and changed and built upon. Also its nothing more than Java script run inside a virtual machine. Meaning the “linux” part of it is a non factor cause Java can run on anything. The only reason Google chose the Linux kernal was that it was free. They don’t do any further development of Linux and don’t put any of their work upstream to Linux since they don’t do any work on Linux. Just the Java thats being run on it.
Google are nothing more than moochers. And the first chance I get to truly support a Linux phone and software I will.
Keep up the great work guys!!! God bless ya
I think it is now possible to make syncing better.
Such as syncing with Kde Kontact and Google or other Exchange Servers.
This was a thing that I often miss!
Greetings Sven
