And so the end begins…

My worst fears were realized when I noticed a strange thing on the usb end after unplugging the usb cable. It immediately dawned on me that it was the USB connector, and it had suffered the same fate as many reports earlier (t.m.o, tabulacrypticum, engadget).

My use of the N900, as seen from lack of posts recently, had been greatly reduced due to the Blackberry Torch (from work) being my primary device. Even though I have an external charger, yanking out the battery every day, is not going to be a viable option. Sadly, this will reduce the usage even more.

The fact that the USB connector broke the same day I received a Palm Pre 2 as a developer device from HP was striking. The Pre 2, by the way, seems like a very interesting device but in no way as hackable as the great N900. I will keep an eye out for a good deal online because the lure of the N900, even after all this time, is just too strong!

SomePlayer – An AweSome audio player for the N900

If you thought that development on Maemo was slowing down, think again. SomePlayer is a feature packed audio player with a simple yet well-designed UI. Based on Qt, it is fast and offers all the things that were missed in the stock ‘Media Player’ like playlist management, Equalizer, and most of all, full-portrait support.

SomePlayer landed in Extras last week and has already been downloaded a whopping 45000 times. Here are some screenshots:

The software is already available in 5 languages (pl, it, zh_CN, ru, zh_TW); if you can provide help with more, jump in!

The creators seems to be from Russia. Kudos to the team for an aweSome app.

GOM Reminder – a handy organizer for the N900

Checked out this nice app at the Ovi Store. Its a simple and easy to use utility that allows you to set up reminders quickly which trigger the standard system alarm.

Reminders can be from simple ones that trigger after a set time to more sophisticated ones with various options for recurrences like ‘Forever’, ‘Until’ and ‘X Times’. The options are laid out logically and makes using the app a breeze. Nice job by the guys at Tardigrada.

Fremantle Community SSU – Preview (screenshots)

The work on the Maemo 5 Community SSU continues apace and should be ready for primetime very soon. I thought it would be informative to showcase some of the upcoming features in the form of screenshots.

Disclaimer: These screenshots were taken from the latest beta which may differ from the final release.

Babyphone – a wonderful baby-monitoring app

February 10, 2011 9 comments

Since my new son had started sleeping in a different room in his crib a few weeks ago, Babyphone has been an indispensible tool to keep an ear on the baby during the night when he wakes up.

After tweaking the Babyphone settings to the desired sensitivity the first time, putting the N900 next to the crib has become routine. I just make sure the battery is at least 60% and launch the app. When my son wakes up, Babyphone faithfully calls my other phone sitting right next to my bed.

Big thanks to the dev and the collective community for this free and awesome app.

Back to testing and Voting

Been away from the testing scene lately because I have been carrying my new Blackberry from work instead of the N900. I tried carrying both together for a while but it turned out to be too inconvenient.

Anyway, the testing queue is growing ever longer. Its good in a way to see apps actively being developed on Maemo but its also unfortunate to see many of them not getting voted for. It would be great see the testing queue get cleared so that new apps or newer versions become available in the stable Extras quickly.

Here are some apps I tested lately that need some votes. If you have some time to spare, give them a try and vote if you think they meet the criteria.

Checked out Gas-Balls from the Ovi Store.

Its a nice Live-Wallpaper-like application developed by Nokia. The gas balls bounce around on the desktop, respond to tilt, and explode in vibrant colors when touched.

It comes in 3 modes:

1) Fullscreen

2) Background

This mode will turn the app into a Live-Wallpaper but still respond to tilt and touch.

3) Transparent

This mode will run as a transparent layer on top of the current background.

The app is resource intensive but nice to play around with. The physics behind it are impresssive as the balls bounce on the widgets and the flames wrap around desktop widgets. Its also good to see Nokia still coming up with apps for Maemo.

Now the downside. It doesn’t play well with Live-Wallpaper. Sherman-Aquarium disappeared but continued to take system-resources. Had to restart it from the Settings.

Either way, its worth a look!
