Updated Ovi Maps

Updated Maps today using the Nokia Maps Loader. Battled in frustration with Nokia Maps ‘Updater’ for a while before realizing that its the ‘Loader’ that I needed. Anyway, the process was simple, connect the N900 in Mass Storage Mode, run the Loader and download the maps to your content. Interestingly, even voices can be downloaded and installed, but it is not supported by the Ovi Maps software on the device. Really digging the 3D landmarks feature.

it’s amazing that you managed to load the maps on the Nokia N900.

I tried to load the maps while connecting in mass storage and i still receive that the phone is not supported.

can you tell us about the software version used? and if possible brief note on procedures uded to load the maps?

    Thank you.

Are you sure you are using ‘Nokia Map Loader’ and not ‘Nokia Maps Updater’? I used the Map Loader version You can download it here Go directly to ‘Step 3: Get Map Loader’ and download. The procedure then is simple. connect the N900 in Mass Storage and start Map Loader. Here is a screenshot

Hmm, I fought with the maps loader for a while and almost gave up. I closely monitored what was happening and noticed that when I connected n900 using usb cable and selected mass storage mode on phone, there was an error about USB connection problem that I hadnt noticed before and was instead fiddling with other places for settings.
Finally got it working but it is downloading latest map info for n900 and says it would take 3.5 hoirs to finish πŸ˜› not sure if that is normal. hopefully it wont mess up the phone..

hey, I hope it finished successfully πŸ™‚ The Map Loader works pretty well. Its wierd that you can select ‘voices’ when the feature isn’t even available on Ovi Maps.

yes, though the setup is painfully slow, it works faster (atleast seems to be faster to me). True, the lack of voice support is bad.

Also, to me it looks like using the maploader interface is a one way thing, though I have loaded maps and voices to my n900, they do not show up as already present next time I connect. So it looks like maploader cannot be used to delete/ undo changes to maps already downloaded to n900.

i meant individually delete maps loaded. There is a ‘delete maps frpm storage’ button in the maps loader gui that looks like it will delete everything. Overall, i think maploader is working because of a loophole and is not intended to support n900 in any way.

Waiting (hoping) for a firmware fix to extend the full ovi navigation support on n900…
